Building health systems that serve families and communities
A strong health system is one of the most important foundations for community resilience. In rural and peri-urban areas, families often struggle to access timely care, preventive services and trustworthy health advice. KingFab Foundation works with NGOs to strengthen local health systems so that care is more reliable, more responsive, and more connected to the people who need it.
Our health systems strengthening work focuses on three main pillars: community outreach, workforce development, and preparedness. These pillars reinforce one another. Better trained health workers can deliver higher-quality care, which encourages families to use services earlier. Strong community outreach ensures that prevention and referral information reaches people before illnesses escalate.
We believe that health systems should be community-centered. That means listening to local leaders, supporting trusted health volunteers, and building services around the realities of daily life. These relationships help make care feel less distant and more accessible.
Training the frontline workforce
Health systems only improve if the people delivering care are equipped to do so. That is why we invest heavily in training for community health workers, nurses, midwives, and clinic staff. These trainings cover essential clinical skills, patient communication, referral systems and the effective use of health data.
Many frontline providers also benefit from mentorship, peer learning groups and ongoing professional support. This helps them stay motivated and up-to-date with evolving health priorities. When health workers feel supported, they are more likely to provide compassionate, consistent care.
Our programmes also strengthen the connection between facility-based staff and community health volunteers. This improves case finding, referral follow-up and continuity of care, especially for maternal and child health, malaria prevention, and chronic conditions.
Reaching families where they are
Community outreach is a key element of our health systems work. We support door-to-door visits, community health education sessions and local health fairs that bring information and basic services closer to households. This outreach helps families identify warning signs early, understand prevention measures, and access referrals before conditions worsen.
Outreach also plays a vital role in breaking down barriers to care. It can address fears, misinformation and stigma around illnesses such as malaria, pneumonia, maternal health challenges and COVID-19. When trusted community members deliver the message, it is more likely to be heard and acted upon.
We work with local NGOs to ensure outreach is culturally sensitive, gender-responsive and designed to reach the most vulnerable, including women, children and elderly community members.
Preparing for health emergencies
Health systems must be ready for both everyday care and unexpected shocks. We support preparedness activities that improve the ability of clinics and communities to respond to disease outbreaks, floods, and other emergencies. This includes training in infection prevention, emergency referral protocols, and stock management for medicines and supplies.
Preparedness also means strengthening communication and coordination. We help health teams set up clear lines between clinics, health volunteers and district health authorities. When an outbreak occurs, faster coordination saves lives and reduces the spread of illness.
These systems are not built overnight. They require planning, practice and continuous improvement. That is why we support simulations, reviews and follow-up support so that lessons become lasting capacity.
Making primary care more effective and equitable
Primary care is the entry point for most families, and it must be effective. We support improvements in clinic management, patient flow, and the quality of routine services such as antenatal care, immunizations, and child wellness checks. These improvements make health systems more usable and more trusted by the people they serve.
Equity is also essential. We help ensure that services reach people in remote communities, women who may need maternal support, and families with limited financial resources. This often means working through community-based health insurance pilots, transport linkages, and referral support that reduce barriers to care.
When primary care works well, it becomes a foundation for healthier lives and a more resilient community.
Sustainable impact through local health partnerships
Sustainability is at the heart of health systems strengthening. We work with local organizations that have deep roots in their communities, supporting them to lead and own the solutions they implement. This includes building local training capacity, strengthening health data systems, and helping partners design programmes that are financially realistic and locally manageable.

When families feel that their needs are heard and met, they are more likely to seek care early and follow through with recommended treatment.
